William Sinclair III

Managing Partner & Chief Investment Officer

William Sinclair III founded Sinclair & Voss in 1998 with a conviction that private clients deserve the same caliber of investment thinking traditionally reserved for endowments and pension funds. Over the past quarter-century, that founding principle has guided every decision the firm has made—from the way portfolios are constructed to the way client relationships are maintained.

Before establishing the firm, William spent nine years at a major institutional asset manager in New York, where he served as a portfolio strategist responsible for over $4 billion in endowment and foundation assets. That experience instilled a long-term, disciplined approach to investing that remains central to Sinclair & Voss’s philosophy today. He saw firsthand how patient capital, deployed with conviction and managed with rigor, compounds in ways that reactive, trend-chasing strategies simply cannot.

William earned his MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he concentrated in finance and decision sciences. He completed his undergraduate studies at Davidson College, graduating with honors in economics. He earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1996 and has maintained it continuously since.

His investment approach emphasizes strategic asset allocation, a disciplined rebalancing process, and selective use of alternative investments where they offer genuine diversification benefits. He is skeptical of complexity for its own sake and believes that a well-constructed, transparent portfolio will outperform a complicated one over any reasonable time horizon.

Beyond the firm, William serves on the investment committee of the Charlotte Community Foundation and is an active member of the CFA Society of North Carolina. He and his wife, Margaret, live in the Myers Park neighborhood of Charlotte, where they are involved with several local educational and arts organizations.
